Andiron
An andiron is a metal stand for supporting burning wood in a fireplace. Andirons usually come in pairs. Andirons can be used in place of a fireplace grate or in addition to a grate.
Bellows
A bellows is a device with an air bag that emits a stream of air when squeezed. A two-handled bellows would permit you to safely start or stoke a fire.
Damper
A damper is a metal plate in the chimney smoke-duct that controls the draft and thus the rate of a fire's combustion. A damper should be closed when you're not using your fireplace to keep heat from escaping through the chimney.
Damper Pull
A damper pull or hook is a tool used for opening and closing the damper. To prevent accidents, hang a damper pull from the damper handle when the damper is closed, and from a screen or other accessory when the damper is open.
Fender
A fender is a low frame bordering a fireplace to keep in falling coals or wood and to discourage people from drawing too close to the flame.
Fireback
A fireback is the back wall of a fireplace or an iron sheet used to protect the back wall of a fireplace and reflect heat out into a room.
Gas Logs
Gas logs are usually made from a fireproof mix of molded refractory cement, fired ceramic clay, and molded ceramic fibers. An internal burner uses natural gas or liquid propane to produce heat and/or fire without burning the logs.
Hearth Rug
A non-flammable rug placed in front of your fireplace to prevent damage to carpet or flooring.
Log Carrier
A canvas or leather device used to carry logs to a fireplace from an outside storage area.
Log Grate
A metal frame placed inside a fireplace to prevent wood or fuel from falling out.
Log Rack
A rack used for temporary storage of firewood, kindling, and fireplace tools.
Tool Set
A tool set is a collection of items for tending a fire and cleaning a fireplace. Most tool sets include a poker, shovel, tongs, and broom.
