Rustic Bar Stool Buying Guide

When you're sitting at the bar, drink in hand and watching the game, a rustic bar stool seems like a pretty simple thing. When selecting the right rustic bar stools for your home bar, pay attention to the details you don't normally notice. A comfortable, properly sized bar stool is just like a good referee: your guests shouldn't even notice it's there.

  1. A tape measure is the most important tool in your home when it comes to buying rustic bar stools. Size up your table or rustic home bar before you do anything else. The service industry standard is that 10 to 13 inches should separate a bar stool from a table. If you intend to buy a barstool with arms, add inches accordingly.
  2. There are three basic rustic bar stool options you can go with. The first is the traditional bar stool, which usually seats you about 29-31 inches from the floor. If you're adding the industry standard, that means a bar stool is appropriate for a table anywhere from 39 to 44 inches above ground. A counter stool usually seats 24 to 26 inches up, or about a 3-foot table, and a chair usually 17 to 19 inches, or a 2 1/2-foot table.
  3. Service industry standard for space between bar stools is 26 to 30 inches. If your home bar is 6 feet across, that translates to probably three rustic bar stools. Of course, you can always seat a couple behind the bar for mixing drinks and grabbing ice.
  4. Coordinate your rustic bar stools with your rustic home bar and its surroundings. If they're in your sports themed recreation room, look for bar stools with the logo of your favorite team. Bar stools are made from such materials as wood, metal, wrought iron, or rattan, so finding the right fit for your basement or backyard should be simple.
  5. If you've got HDTV and surround sound, you won't want to skimp on extra features for your bar stools. Swivel, high back, armrests, leather upholstery: select the options that will have your guests relaxing in style and comfort.
